Well, what the hell, let’s do another DIY! Do you have hideous 1980s cabinet handles that mock you with their ugliness? Yeah, me too. So let’s fix that. This DIY project is called “How to Make Sexy Leather Cabinet Handles That Will Change Your Life”. Full disclosure, these may not actually change your life.
Materials:
A strip of leather - i bought a roll of 50”L x 1”W from amazon (i recommend 1” width at the max)
Hammer
Adjustable wrench
Leather punch - also from amazon
Scissors or box cutter (not pictured)
1 1/4” button head screws (2 per handle) - this depends on your cabinet door thickness
Nuts (2 per handle)How to:
- Figure out how many handles you need. This will require you do math for the first time in 10 years. Deal with it! Start by measuring how long your handles should be. An easy way to do this is by measuring between the handle drill holes on the cabinet (mine were 3” apart). Then add two inches for space to squeeze your fingers in there. 3 + 2 = 5 kids. Hold the applause please.
- Now cut your leather strip into pieces using heavy duty scissors or a box cutter (I cut 10, 5” pieces).
- Put a little dot 1” from both ends of the leather strips to mark where the screw should go. Don’t free hand this you crazy sons of b’s. You’ll need a tape measure so they are all even!
- Now the fun part, place your leather punch over the dot and hammer the end until you punch a hole through the leather. You may want to put something something hard underneath like a cutting board or a scrap piece of wood bc shits about to get tough.
- Repeat this for each strip on both ends.
- Now go get a drink of water bc you are tired from punching all those holes in leather.
- Okay stop lolly gagging and get back to work! Thread the screws into the newly punched holes. Now it’s starting to look like a handle yes!
- Assemble the handles onto the cabinets and fasten the nuts.
- Tighten the nuts with your wrench so the handles don’t move around all willy nilly.
- Viola you are done!
Congratulations on being a badass DIY’er and using math and having sexy leather handles on your cabinets.
